2021 Wellness Trends

01.06.2022

The harmony of soul, body and mind brings balance and health to our whole beings. Healthy living is surely not a new phenomenon in our lives; but our focus on this concept, realizing its different aspects and making time for it have gained momentum recently.

In fact, during this last 1 year when we have become most appreciative of the value of healthy living, certain trends we began to follow worldwide have emerged and "Wellness" has become an indispensable part of our lives. We have had the opportunity to deal with matters that would make us feel like new, including sleep, self-care routine, nutrition, meditative practices, and exercise, and we have adopted holistic approaches in our self-care adventure. Now, let's take a look at the 9 Wellness trends predicted for this year in the report of the "Global Wellness Summit".

Adoption of Wellness By the Entertainment World And the Hollywood Industry

In fact, most of those who are interested in Wellness started productions in the fields of TV, music and technology, and with each passing day, we can observe an increase in adaptation in this area with the appearance of new programs, mobile applications, videos, playlists and podcasts. This is of course affecting the attainability and accessibility of Wellness at an unprecedented rate, and it is expected that in 2021, Wellness will gain more and more importance as it enters our lives through major media outlets and thus influences even more people.

Future of the Immune System

Strengthening the immune system should not be interpreted as ‘boosting’, i.e., the trend of raising it; but ‘balancing’; i.e., keeping it in balance. During the pandemic when we have begun to recognize more the value of our immune system, we are considerably more in touch with the super-foods, supportive foods and vitamins that we have tried and focused on. However, it is now discussed that these super-foods, supportive foods and vitamins would not cause any significant improvement in our immune system that has such a complex structure, as the value of keeping the immune system in balance instead of temporarily increasing it has been realized and emphasized. Therefore, new trends such as permanent and solution-oriented approaches to the immune system, metabolic health, microbiome (i.e., keeping the intestinal flora in balance) and personalized nutrition are emerging. From positive stress experiences to intermittent fasting, it is accordingly predicted that we will keep seeing more experiments regarding the resilience of our immune system.

Living Spaces With Architecturally Spiritual And Ethereal Textures

This year, complex and flamboyant living spaces are being replaced by calm, simple spaces appealing to our souls. Studies conducted within the recent years has revealed the connection between the space we live in and our mental, physical and spiritual health. Such that, in 2021, the concept of “thin place” comprised of spaces specifically designed to serve the sacred moments of our cognition and health, is regarded as a new architectural way to nurture our spirituality and connect us with our deeper selves.

Proliferation of Breathing Practices

In the past, breath therapy was a group practice exercised mostly in the fields of yoga and meditation, but the extent it has reached now is much different from then. Indeed, leading medical schools are arguing that how we breathe has a profound impact on our physical and mental health. People, fields, techniques and technologies are coming together to push breathing practice in new directions. Such that the inclusion of breathing exercises in the ‘Biohacking’ movement, one of the popular methods of healthy living, as well as the organization of breathing therapy parties and festivals are designated among the plans for 2021.

Self-Care Reform

Following the medical/pharmaceutical outbreak called the Medical Renaissance between years of 1400 and 1700, the fact that Wellness is taken as an integrated lifestyle and has adopted a self-care culture is considered as a great reform. While Wellness keeps learning to draw its strength from science, build its standards and make itself explicable, the health industry is beginning to borrow from the contents of Wellness and transform itself into a much more holistic, lifestyle-oriented and enjoyable one. Therefore, these two are envisioned to guide people to optimal health by means of their converging and a high degree of customization of prescriptions.
