Shiatsu Therapy

31.05.2022

Shiatsu therapy is one of the spa therapies that helps us escape from our stressful, worried, depressive moods that affect our physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing by allowing us to renew and balance ourselves.

In this treatment type, “Shi” means finger, “atsu” means applying pressure to various regions of the body. So, how is this method applied and what are its effects? Let’s take a look at what should be known about shiatsu therapy.

What Is the Source of Shiatsu Therapy?

Shiatsu, whose origins come from Japan, is based on the philosophy of the body healing itself and finding balance. Shiatsu is a massage therapy and is applied on specific parts of the body using fingers in order to correct imbalances. This therapy that reflects a blended version of Chinese medicine with Western techniques means “finger pressure” in Japanese. It is a technique that uses the pressure from fingers and palms to balance and improve the energy flow of the body.

How Is It Applied?

Shiatsu techniques that became richer in time have been created drawing inspiration from philosophic and theoric physical approaches and their joint purpose is to be able to touch correct areas with correct pressures. Pressure is applied to the specific areas based on the energy that flows through the meridians in the body and the goal is to assure that the energy flow can circulate the body uninterruptedly since the belief is that a healthy body structure can only be achieved this way. Fingers are usually kept for around 2 to 8 seconds per pressure point. Therapists, by stimulating these points, aim to promote the Chi, or in other words life energy and to achieve a certain harmony. According to the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, blockages in the Chi flow can cause certain diseases.

In some situations, the pressure points stimulated during the therapy can be sensitive. However, it does not harm the person. People who experience the therapy usually describe this sensitivity as “good pain”. When there is discomfort or pain, the pressure must be adjusted in order to make the massage more comfortable.

Shiatsu therapy is usually applied on a low massage table or on a floor cushion. Guests can experience this technique while dressed, since massage oil is not used.

What Are Its Effects?

Simultaneous healing of the mind and body is at the forefront of this therapy. The main effects after the massage are; relaxation of the individual, feeling energized and being more mentally vigorous. Some of the other effects are listed below:

  • Relieves the tension in the muscle tissue and helps the tissue gain flexibility.
  • Increases blood circulation with the relieving of muscle tension and contributes to the nutrition of the muscles.
  • Speeds up lymphatic circulation and stimulates hormonal systems.
  • Balances nervous, respiratory and digestive systems.
  • Stimulates the immune system and has a deep cleansing effect on the body.
  • Provides visible improvement in physical and mental performance, thanks to its ability to reduce stress and anxiety.
  • Since it has a stimulating effect on the circulation of capillaries it supports the skin look moisturized and smooth.
  • It aims to improve the quality of life while contributing to eliminating sleep problems, fatigue and pain including the problems of individuals with fibromyalgia.

Since this technique might cause side effects in some situations, it is important not to apply it without consulting a medical professional first. For instance; inflammatory or infectious diseases, liver and pancreatic problems, severe intestinal blockages, high fever conditions, pregnancy, recent exposure to chemotherapy and radiation, osteoporosis, heart disease, and blood clots.
